What affordable web design actually means

Affordable and cheap are not the same thing. Cheap is the number you pay at the start. Affordable is what the website costs you over the two or three years you actually use it, including the parts nobody quotes for: hosting, updates, security, the small edits you need in year two, and the inquiries a slow or broken site quietly loses.

A website that costs little up front and then sits unmaintained, loads slowly and cannot be edited without paying someone is not affordable. It is just cheap at the moment of purchase.

This page is about what affordable web design should include for a contractor or a local service business, and what to check before you buy.

The four ways local businesses usually buy a website

Each of these is a reasonable choice for somebody. They fail for different reasons, and the failure is rarely about the design.

RouteWhat is good about itWhere it usually goes wrong
Do it yourself on a site builderLowest cash cost. You keep control. It takes your evenings for weeks, and the result usually looks like a template because it is one. The real cost is your time and a site that does not convert.
One-off cheap buildA fixed price, and the site exists.Ongoing support, hosting and updates are often limited or charged separately. Small edits tend to cost money, and in a year or two the site usually needs rebuilding.
Full agency buildA considered, custom site.Often a larger upfront investment and a longer build. Fine for a business with the budget for it, and out of reach for many local service businesses.
Monthly managed websiteNothing large upfront, and the site stays maintained. You are paying every month rather than once. The site must keep earning its place, which is a fair test of it.

Web Premium is the last row. It is worth knowing the trade-off before you choose it, which is covered further down this page.

What affordable web design has to include to stay affordable

If these are not included, they do not disappear. They become separate bills, or they get skipped and the site degrades.

HostingFast hosting on our servers. Nothing separate to buy or renew.
Updates and securityWordPress, plugins and security patches kept current, so the site does not rot quietly in the background.
Changes and editsNew services, new photos, changed hours or a new service area. You ask, we do it.
SupportA person who knows your site, rather than a ticket queue.
A site built to turn visitors into inquiriesFast on a phone, obvious how to get in touch, and structured around how people actually hire your trade. See lead generation website design.

A Managed Website from Web Premium starts at $197 a month with all of the above included and no upfront build fee.

The honest trade-off with a monthly website

A monthly model removes the upfront cost, which is the barrier for most local businesses. It is not free of trade-offs, and you should know them before you sign up rather than after.

You pay for as long as you use it. Over several years a monthly site can add up to more than a one-off build. What you get for that is a site that stays fast, current and supported, rather than one that ages from the day it launches.

The website becomes yours after three paid months. Your domain is registered in your name from the start and always stays yours. If you leave after that point, we hand over the files and point the domain wherever you want, at no charge.

The Smart features are a service, not a file. The Smart Website tools run on our systems, so those stop if the subscription ends, even though the website itself is yours.

The short version. No large cheque at the start, no separate hosting and maintenance bills, and the site is yours after three months. In exchange, it is a monthly cost for as long as you want it looked after.

If your main priority is making the site itself convert visitors into inquiries, see lead generation website design.

You see the design before you pay anything

The part most web design quotes ask you to take on faith is what it will actually look like. We do that first instead. Pick a design concept built for your trade, tell us about the business, and we design your homepage around it. It lands within two business days.

If you like it, we build the rest and launch it as a Managed Website. Every new site also launches with all five Smart Website features switched on for the first 30 days at the Managed price. If you do not like it, you keep the design and you owe nothing.

Questions about affordable web design

How much should a small business website cost?
It depends on whether you are buying the site alone or the site plus everything that keeps it working. A one-off build can look cheaper until hosting, updates, security and edits are added back in. A Web Premium Managed Website is $197 a month with those included and no upfront build fee.
Is cheap web design worth it?
Sometimes. If you need a simple presence and nothing more, a builder template may be enough. It stops being worth it when the site is slow on a phone, hard to edit, or does not make it obvious how to contact you, because then it costs you inquiries every month it stays up.
Is there an upfront build fee?
No. You see your homepage designed first at no charge, and if you go ahead the site is built and launched on the monthly plan. There is no separate build invoice.
Do I own the website?
Yes. Your domain is registered in your name from the start, and after three paid months the website is yours. If you move on, we hand over the files and point the domain wherever you want, at no charge. The Smart Website features run on our systems, so those stop with the subscription.
What happens if I stop paying?
Before three paid months, the site comes down and you keep your domain. After three paid months the website is yours, so we hand over the files. Either way the domain is yours because it was always registered in your name.
Do you only work with contractors?
Contractors are most of what we do, and the design concepts are built for the trades. Local service businesses outside the trades are welcome too. Ask us and we will tell you honestly whether we are a good fit.
